  • 12 Indian FMCG Brands were sold over billions of times in 2018 along with 2 brands from China and 17 global brands.

Brand Footprint reports that over 1 billion times customers have preferred 31 FMCG brands worldwide, Coca-Cola is the most selected product brand in the seventh year running and leads this exclusive ‘ billionaire club ‘

17 International brands have been selected from the shelves over a billion times in 2018 and are part of a ‘ billionaire group ‘ along with 14 local brands from China and India. Local brands have seen an increase in the number of times customers have chosen, with their share increasing to 64.8 percent compared to 35.2 percent of global brands.

According to the 2019 edition of Kantar’s Brand Footprint survey, there are 17 international fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands chosen more than a billion times a year by customers, and 14 regional FMCG brands in this unique’ billionaire club.’

The ratings for the Brand Footprint calculate which brands are most often purchased by most consumers. At a global level, Coca-Cola is the most purchased brand in the world, pulled 5.9 billion times a year from the shelves. Only Colgate and Maggi retained their top places as well as being the most picked personal care and food brands in the world.

Colgate continues to be the only brand preferred by more than half of the world’s population— being present in six out of 10 (60.5%) households worldwide, while Maggi continued its strong performance in seeing how consumer choice increased to 7% and cemented its position as the world’s 3rd most selected brand.

The report also reveals that local brands rose in 2018, taking 64.8% of all brand-consumer choices, versus the 35.2% share of global brands, an increase of 0.3%, which is a decrease compared to the 0.5% rise in 2017. Of local brands, the biggest achievement was in the category Health & Beauty where they managed to raise the number of times customers choose them by+ 0.7 percent.

While the winning share of local brands continues, international manufacturers like Unilever have also shown how to win at the local level by tailoring their goods to the needs of local markets with brands like Wheel and Surf Excel in the home care sector and Clinic Plus in the beauty & personal care field.

Here is the list of 12 Indian FMCG Brands which were bought billion times-

  • Parle
  • Amul
  • Clinic Plus
  • Britannia
  • Aavin
  • Ghadi
  • Nandini
  • Tata
  • Wheel

Josep Montserrat, CEO of Worldpanel Division, Kantar, explained: “Global FMCG brands have great opportunities to grow by considering the specificities of the local market and adapting their offer to the choices, preferences and buying behavior of local consumers. Those brands that are able to respond agilely to the challenge will continue to grow.

Kantar’s annual Brand Footprint study is based on data from 72% of the world’s population; a total of one billion households in 49 countries spanning five continents, representing 85% of global GDP. As part of the study, in the 12 months to November 2018, Worldpanel monitors over 21,400 brands across drinks, meat, dairy, wellness, beauty, and home care.
