  • With 451 million internet users at the end of the financial year 2019, India is now second only to China in terms of monthly active internet users.
  • In terms of userbase & popularity, here we present the top 5 social media networks in India.

1. Facebook:

Without any doubt, Facebook is one of the best social media networks in India. One major reason behind its popularity is related to Orkut’s exit from the internet. Facebook is operational since 2004 but it was overshadowed by Orkut globally.

In September 2014 when Orkut disappeared from the internet that’s when Facebook started its journey to become the most famous amongst its users.

While Facebook’s global userbase is more than 2.45 billion, there are more than 241 million Indians socializing on the social media platform.

With features like pages, Facebook businesses, groups and more, it attracts a lot of youth and business owners to utilize the platform in as many ways possible.

2. WhatsApp:

WhatsApp, the best alternative for SMS has slowly turned an alternative for voice/video calls too. Globally WhatsApp has a userbase of more than 1.6 billion.

In India, the text message app was launched in 2010 and within 9 years, the app managed to have more than 250 million users from India. The messenger app also got humongous exposure when Facebook brought it under its portfolio.

More than a billion messages being sent every day along with a feature to put status for 24 hours, WhatsApp is the 2nd most preferred social media network in India.

3. YouTube:

From funny video compilations to news channels, music, and informative tutorials, the video streaming app has been delivering everything! If Google is the most preferred search engine for anything, then YouTube is the search engine to search for any video.

More than 2 billion users are using this platform and in India, the userbase is said to be more than 265 million. Creators preferer uploading their videos on YouTube because they are rewarded on the basis of their watch time and virality.

YouTube is not only one of the best social media networks in India, but at the same time, it’s the most preferred platform in terms of earnings for video content creators.

4. TikTok:

While all other popular social media networks in India have 5+ years of exitance, the TikTok app launched in 2017 in India and in just 2 years the app managed to onboard more than 200 million users on its platform.

A short video app with a plethora of effects and filters (to make the video look amazing) is giving a tough fight to Snapchat & Instagram! TikTok is yet to roll out its monetization policy, but for now, people are loving this platform and every day millions of videos are uploaded on TikTok.

5. Snapchat:

Though Instagram & Snapchat are really close there is a reason we have chosen Snapchat over Instagram.

If we talk about userbase in India, Snapchat has more than 11.5 million userbase (210 million globally). A fun photo app that comes with emojis and games. The emojis you make, you can feature them in various comic scenes with your friends.

Another interesting thing about this app is that to attract more userbase from India, Snapchat is working on its platform to launch the app in regional languages Hindi, Punjabi, Gujrati & Tamil.

So, there were top 5 social media apps in India based on userbase and popularity. While there is a tough fight for sport 5th between Instagram & Snapchat, the latter wins the race because of its strategy to do something towards regional languages in India.

Another amazing thing about these top social media apps in India is that Facebook still rules the list! Facebook owns Whatsapp and Instagram, and the trio together is giving a tough competition to other social media apps.
