  • On the 60th birth anniversary of Doordarshan, where people turned nostalgic on Twitter to mark the 60 years journey of the public service broadcaster of India’s 60 years.
  • It was started off as an experiment on September 15, 1959, and became a service in 1965 when it started beaming signals to reach the TV sets in living rooms in and around the national capital. It expanded its arms in 1972 to Mumbai and Amritsar and moved to seven other cities by 1975.

First memory of a TV Channel, fond memories of childhood TV shows, Doordarshan has been a lot more than just a TV Channel.

Doordarshan turned 60 on Sunday calling back all the old memories of the golden period when entertainment in the country revolved around serials such Fauji, Malgudi Days and Mahabharata.

On the 60th birth anniversary of Doordarshan, where people turned nostalgic on Twitter to mark the 60 years journey of the public service broadcaster of India’s 60 years.

A lot of threads with people asking favorite shows of Doordarshan made rounds on social media.

Few people posted the iconic logo that used to appear before the start of programs with the iconic tune. People shared their fond memories which are associated with Doordarshan and remembered iconic shows that made their childhood days amazing.

Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati said, “It’s a moment to recognize that it’s not that Doordarshan has gotten older, but it is getting newer for digital audiences.”

“It is not only that Doordarshan has turned 60 but the history of television broadcasting in India now spans 6 decades – a milestone for all of the TV industry in India,” he said.

Directed General of Doordarshan Supriya Sahu said, “Doordarshan is in the DNA of India. Congratulations on an incredible journey of 60 years. Happy Birthday. May you continue to thrill the coming generations of India.

Doordarshan was started off as an experiment in 1950 and it can take pride in emerging in the leading broadcaster of this nation.

Doordarshan has been giving hig-tech coverage of national and international events from the days of Ramayana, Hum Log, Buniyaad, and Surabhi.

It was started off as an experiment on September 15, 1959, and became a service in 1965 when it started beaming signals to reach the TV sets in living rooms in and around the national capital. It expanded its arms in 1972 to Mumbai and Amritsar and moved to seven other cities by 1975.

Throughout this time it was a part of the national broadcaster, All India Radio. Doordarshan got its identity as a separate department in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on April 1, 1976.

Doordarshan has transformed into a network of 34 operating satellite channels, besides providing free-to-air DTH service having 104 in its bookings,

A lot of careers were launched on this platform, including that of Bollywood’s kind superstar Shah Rukh Khan who became a household name after his role in the series Fauji, and many shows went on to become classics.

Entertainment shows such as Mahabharat, Chitrahaar, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Fauji, Malgudi days and many more which captured the imagination of the audience of the late 80s and early 90s and still remains etched in people’s minds are pure entertainment that brought people together.

A Sunday morning, hot breakfast on the table and the whole family waiting to watch the Mahabharata on Doordarshan, feels much nostalgic? That’s how almost every childhood Sunday started with. Happy Birthday, Doordarshan.
