Forbes worked with Statista to compile the annual list of the world’s 2,000 largest public companies based on 1,4 million suggestions for jobs from a global poll and national surveys. Respondents around the world were asked to rate their employer and the likelihood that a friend or family member would be recommended to this employer. Other employers they admired were also rated.
For the third year in a row, Alphabet took the top spot, followed by second-place rival Microsoft. Red Hat made its debut at No. 3, followed by Apple at No. 4, an open-source software provider. To claim fifth place, the German technology giant SAP climbed 43 places. While tech companies dominate the top spots on this year’s Best Employers list, the finance and banking sectors have been the best-represented on the list as a whole. Fifty-two regional banks made the top 500, including the Bank Cantonale Vaudoise of Switzerland at No. 30 and the HDFC Bank of India at No. 119.

Despite being top of the table Alphabet, it has been a tumultuous year for the company in many ways. Google staff made headlines last November after coordinating a series of high-profile walkouts in response to sexual harassment claims being handed down by the organization. There were thousands of employees involved. In a letter published by the New York magazine, walkout organizers said they called for “an end to sexual harassment, sexism, and systemic racism that drive[ Google’s] toxic culture.” Google promised to change its policies following the massive protests.
This year, Google has also scrutinized the care of its seasonal and contract workers. The company announced in April that it will allow all types of employees to earn a minimum hourly wage of $15 and extensive coverage for health care.
It will be interesting to see after all these controversies will Alphabet be able to retain the top spot from next year.
