Apple has shipped more smartphones than any other company in quarter 4 of 2020. As per the report, the company has dethroned Samsung to claim the first spot for the first time since 2016. Gartner reported this quarterly data on Monday. It is one of the prestigious company that conducted this smartphone market research.
How Apple Performed So Well in Pandemic?
Apple led the shipment chart with over 80 million smartphone units shipment. The company took a big lead against all smartphone manufacturers including Samsung.
As per Gartner’s research finding, Apple iPhone12 with the 5G feature is the most selling phone in the smartphone market.
Apple handled the pandemic issue way better than any company. Its policies did not affect the functionalities of Apple during a difficult time.
Another research firm IDC claims that Apple shipped 90.1 million smartphones in the quarter. IDC also reported that this is the single best quarter for any company in terms of mobile shipments.
Though Apple did not reveal the units sold in quarter 4 it talked about the revenue. As per Apple data, the company revenue saw a surge of 17% in the fourth quarter on a YoY(Year on Year) basis. It had total revenue of $65.6 billion in Q4 of 2020.
Apple sale depends on the different seasons. December quarter is the time when Apple products are in maximum demands.
Status of Global Smartphone Market in 2020
The global Smartphone market saw a decline of 5.4% in the pandemic hit 2020. On the other hand, Apple observed a surge in its product by 3.3%.
If we talk about the complete data of 2020, Samsung shipped the maximum smartphones compare to other manufacturers.
Huawei sale declined maximum among all smartphones manufacturers. In 2020, its demand was reduced by 24.1%. Google decision to ban its apps on Huawei did not go well with the company business.
As per Gartner research data, Samsung, the market leader of 2020, also saw a decline of 14.6% in the shipment due to the covid pandemic.
Considering the whole year 2020 data, Apple surpassed Huawei to become the second-highest seller of 2020.
Xiaomi, a regional smartphone manufacturer, gave a tough competition to other companies. Apple and Xiaomi are the only two manufacturers that are in the top 5 and experienced positive growth.
Xiaomi had a market share of 11.3% in Q4 of 2020. Oppo, another Chinese Smartphone Company, got a market share of 9% in quarter 4. It surpassed Huawei to achieve the 4th position.
In the year 2020, Huawei did not find a place in the top 2 smartphone sellers. Samsung and Apple secured the 1st and 2nd position respectively. Huawei achieved 3rd position.
Market share wise, Samsung had a market share of 18.8% in 2020, whereas Apple had a 14.8% share. Huawei slipped to the third position with a 13.5% market share in 2020.
Xiaomi, a rising smartphone brand at a global level, saw a surge in 2020 to achieve a 10.8% market share.
On the other hand, Oppo jumped to the fifth position with an 8.3% market share. Other manufacturers had a total share of 33.7% in 2020.
