Azim Premji Donated 10 Times more than any Indian Entrepreneur in 2020

Azim Premji, the Wipro founder, is the most generous man in India. He has contributed over Rs 7904 crore that is approximately ten times more than Shiv Nadar, the second biggest donor among Indian entrepreneurs. Mukesh Ambani, the richest person in Asia, ranks third among the list of Indian entrepreneurs who donated different amounts in 2020.

The EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2020

The EdelGive Hurun India has released the Philanthropy List of Indian entrepreneurs in 2020. The overall donations surged to Rs 9324 crore that is the highest in any year. Azim Premji has contributed around 85% of the total donation given by all Indian business persons.

As per Hurun India study, 80 people have donated more than Rs 10 crore in 2020 that is 100% more than in the last two years’ 37 business persons.

2020 list has donors having an average age of 66. The average age of philanthropists increased by two years compared to last year’s list.

Talking about the age factor further, Anas Rahman Junaid, managing director and chief researcher at Hurun India, said:

“Binny Bansal is the first philanthropist under the age of 40 to enter the philanthropy list… I hope this will inspire more young wealth creators to not only donate but also to speak more about their donations.”

30 new Indian entrepreneurs joined the philanthropy work in 2020. Am Naik, Chairman of Larsen and Toubro, is the new entry who donated Rs 76 crore in 2020.

Overall, seven female philanthropists got featured in the 2020 list of donors. No woman is among the top 10 philanthropists.

Major Donation Causes and Top 10 Philanthropists

Among the different causes, education attracted 79% of total donations, as per the recent study.

Healthcare was the second cause that attracted philanthropists. Compared to 2019. Healthcare donation saw a surge by 137% in 2020 due to the covid pandemic.

Disaster and relief management was the third major cause that got a hefty amount of donations in 2020. People donated 240% more to disaster causes compared with 2019.
