The seventh edition of the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2020 was published by Hurun India and EdelGive on Tuesday. Wipro’s Founder-Chairman, Azim Premji & Family, ranked second on the 2020 list, while Shiv Nadar, Founder-Chairman of HCL Technologies, ranked second, followed by Indian Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, in third place. Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, took fourth place, followed by Anil Agarwal, Chairman of the Vedanta Group, in fifth place.
The EdelGive Hurun Philanthropy List 2020 showcases 112 individuals, up 12% compared to the 2019 edition. With 36 city names being part of this version, Mumbai was the chosen city of residence for top philanthropists. Delhi and Bengaluru followed, respectively, as second and third cities. Education remained the biggest cause funded in India by donors, however-mirroring the Global Philanthropy List of Hurun. Compared to last year, healthcare and water discussions saw an increase in donations
Reports of this nature are rare, but they give us a deep insight into the philanthropic industry and the ever-evolving patterns of giving. This year, we have also looked more closely at our methodology to ensure that we keep the process open and encourage leaders of a diverse community to engage in the list proactively. For the first time, 28 philanthropists joined the 2020 EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List. S D Shibulal of Infosys with a donation of INR 32 crore, followed by Amit and Archana Chandra of the A.T.E. Chandra Foundation who donated INR 27 crore, and Shri Ram Beriwala & Shyam Sunder Beriwala of Shyam Steels who donated INR 19 crore, are the top new additions to the list.
Anas Rahman Junaid, MD, and Hurun India Chief Researcher add, “Education has been the preferred cause of India’s top philanthropists, while poverty alleviation has grown dramatically this year to become the second most common cause.” I hope the Hurun Philanthropy List will help people understand and encourage future generations to give back the mindset of some of India’s most successful entrepreneurs and philanthropists.
Rohini Nilekani, who donates through Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, is the most generous woman in India, followed by Thermax’s Anu Aga & family. While Binny Bansal is the only philanthropist to join the philanthropy list under the age of 40 years.
