Hotstar breaks another record. The content streaming platform owned by Disney, which is currently the top OTT player in India in terms of viewers, has stated that it hit 100 million daily active users during the India vs Pakistan clash at the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup in England on 16 June, making it the highest-ever single day reach for platform.
Varun Narang, chief product officer of Hotstar said, “Having achieved a single day platform reach of 100 million demonstrates the indisputable technology prowess that Hotstar brings to the OTT industry. This remarkable achievement has helped us set a new viewership benchmark.”
Hotstar reaching Tier- 2 & 3 Cities
66 percent of the 100 million users came in from the tier-2, tier-3, and non-metro cities and it also registered record-breaking concurrency of 15.6 million, the highest ever for an ODI match, marking a 1.7x increase in average concurrency (total number of simultaneous streams) compared to any other India match.
As the ongoing Cricket World Cup being held in England, Hotstar is providing streams to consumers in the US and Canada through its mobile and web applications as well as on living room devices like Roku TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV stick, Android TV, and Samsung Smart TV.
Indian OTT Market and Hotstar
Counterpoint research in a recent survey on India’s OTT video market reported that Hotstar leads the Indian OTT video content market followed by Amazon Prime Video, SonyLIV, and Netflix.
Star India the parent company of Hotstar paid whopping $944 million in a five year deal for the cricket streaming rights. Cricket streaming has been the primary driver for viewers and revenue numbers for Hotstar.
Hotstar broke its digital viewership record of previous entire IPL season in just the first three weeks;
The IPL final held on May 12 recorded nearly 18.6 million viewers for the match making it the single most live-streamed event in the world.
The company launched its cheaper VIP subscription package this year (at INR 365, $5.2 per year) especially aimed at the cricket loving audience.
Investment in OTT
With OTT market growing in India at a rapid pace, the companies are investing in the platforms. The total investment across the content platforms has crossed a whopping Rs. 3,000 crore. In this race of OTT platforms, Hotstar is leading the pack and is currently ahead of its competition. Recently in April, Hotstar crossed the 300 million mark of active users beating youtube and other players in the game.
With the increasing popularity of premium video content and growth in smartphone and internet users in India, OTT platforms are bound to grow with the rapid pace. Hotstar faces competition from a lot of new players such as MX Player, Shareit and other platforms entering the market.
