Dailyhunt, a Bengaluru based entity announced the acquisition of LocalPlay, city-based hyper-local video content and news content application on Thursday.
This acquisition highlights the strategy of attracting new users who reside in the real ‘Bharat’, the tier 2, 3 and 4 Indian cities and small towns, who want to see the relevant local news.
Virendra Gupta, founder, Dailyhunt said, “The need of hyperlocal content is still untapped despite the presence of few old and new age platforms in India. LocalPlay’s acquisition is a part of the strategic move to penetrate the next billion users of Bharat and build deep sustainable moats around our business. We will position ourselves even better as the go-to destination for local language content in India. Dailyhunt plans scaling up and production of five million pieces of hyperlocal content annually, which will be available to users”.
Dailyhunt claimed that hyperlocal video content and news as the perfect combination to accelerate its next phase of expansion and to emerge as the one-stop destination for local language content consumption in India.
According to the data, Dailyhunt has 188 million monthly active users. The time spent per daily active user is 24 minutes per user per day consuming over 19 billion page views of content and 2.4 billion videos views per month.
“We were working on a specific use case of hyperlocal content and realized that users have broader content needs and given that Dailyhunt has the right mix of original, professionally generated and now hyperlocal news content. It made strategic sense to join forces with them which makes DH the largest local content destination and a quintessential part of the daily lives of its users,” Gunjan Kejriwal, founder, Local Play, said.
At present, Dailyhunt claims to offer more than 250,000 fresh pieces of news and content artifacts every day in 14 languages, licensed from over 1,300 publication partners.
