Sensor Tower is a pioneer in the field of app analytics. Recently, it released the list of the top 10 most downloaded apps and the revenue statistics for the first half of 2021. The report reveals that users’ spendings on apps recorded an all-time high of $64.9 billion. But, app install growth slowed down by 1.7%. And without a surprise, Tiktok is ruling the chart among the most downloaded non-gaming apps worldwide.

Apps Revenue Statistics about first Half of 2021

In recent data released by Sensor Tower, there is a 24.8% surge in app spendings by the users in half one of 2021 compared to the same interval of 2020. Overall, users spent $64.9 billion on the App Store and Play Store both during the Jan-June period of 2021.

Industry experts believe that the growth in spendings is fueled by the covid pandemic and it is slow growth. In H1(half one) of 2020, the app industry recorded a growth of 28.4% to $52 billion compared to H1 spendings of $40.5 billion in 2019. But in H1 of 2021, the growth is slowed down to 24.8%.

App Store continued its leadership in terms of maximum spending share. It recorded $41.5 billion spendings on its platform while Play Store contributed $23.4 billion in the total spendings on apps during H1 of 2021. App Store contributed 1.8 times more than Play Store in the total app spendings revenue.

If we talk about the growth, Play Store has shown more growth than App Store. Its revenue surged by 30% from $18 billion of H1 2020. App Store saw a growth of 22.1% in H1 2021 from $34 billion in revenue in H1 2020. As per Sensor Tower data, this difference is due to the demand from markets like the Philippines, where the COVID-19 pandemic has forced business closures and quarantines.

Tiktok is the most Downloaded non-gaming App of H1 2021

If we talk about the most downloaded apps in H1 2021, Tiktok is a clear winner with 384.6 million downloads on App Store and Play Store both. Individually, it could not retain the first spot on Play Store, while it was the most downloaded app on App Store.

Facebook ranks second among the most downloaded non-gaming apps in H1 2021. It was also the most downloaded app on Play Store. Instagram got the third position globally in terms of most downloads during H1 2021. It maintained the same spot individually on App Store and Play Store.

WhatsApp and Telegram are the other two apps that got fourth and fifth position respectively in H1 2021. Messenger, Zoom, SnapChat, CapCut, and Google Meet occupied 6 to 10 ranks in terms of most downloads during H1 2021.

The app industry is more surprised by a decline in download growth. Covid-19 pandemic fueled the app download surge in H1 2020. As per Sensor Tower statistics, H1 2020 recorded 25.7% year-on-year growth to reach 71.3 billion downloads. But in H1 2021, there is a very slow growth of 1.7% to 72.5 billion downloads.

App Store saw a decline in total downloads by 10.9% to 16.3 billion in H1 2021 compared with the same interval of 2020. Sensor Tower believes that the decline is due to more competition in the iOS market. And, the iOS market like the US has started re-opening and the normal activities are on track. So, users are less dependant on the apps.

Meanwhile, Play Store continued its growth in downloads as well. In H1 2021, Play Store recorded a 6% surge in non-gaming app downloads to 56.2 billion compared with 53 billion in H1 2020. The demand is due to the covid emergency in India that is a strong market for Android.
