- Bengaluru based edtech startup Unacademy has acquired CodeChef, a competitive programming platform based in Mumbai.
Codechef has moved to Unacademy. Here is an excerpt from the blog–
We are now proud to announce a new milestone on our journey – we will soon be under the umbrella of Unacademy instead of Directi and bearing in mind the same set of values and mission! Unacademy is India’s largest learning platform with more than 10,000 educators and over 13 million learners and has always been altruistic in its values. Unacademy aims to democratize the country’s education by offering access to top educators, accessible quality content, and the best learning environment for everyone who wants to crack competitive exams and develop their careers.
Gaurav Munjal, Unacademy Co-Founder, and CEO is a great friend of both me and Bhavin. During his college years, he was an avid coder and user of CodeChef, and in 2013 he was also a part of our CodeChef team before working on his ventures. His passion for coding brought together Unacademy and CodeChef with the aim of helping CodeChef to reach new heights and have a lot more impact! Since 2017, Bhavin has been a board member of Unacademy and will continue to be one and will jointly lead CodeChef with Gaurav.
I am super excited to announce this new chapter in @codechef 's journey. We are moving the custodianship pf Codechef from Directi to @unacademy. Going forward the leadership of codechef will include @gauravmunjal alongwith myself and @anupkal. Details –https://t.co/zK9DJp7Vjh ..

This transition is akin to shifting houses – we’ve got new caretakers and sponsors, but we’re going to stay who we are. CodeChef has and will always continue to work with neighborhood development as its primary focus. Although Unacademy is CodeChef’s new custodian, it does not change any of the programs under CodeChef. All of our existing programs, contests, etc. will remain just as they are and only grow better in our new home.
This change in custody will mean we have greater access to resources, teams, technology, platforms, and capital. And we look forward to making the fullest use of these to further extend our impact! Unacademy will also be pouring in time, effort, and resources to ensure that everyone has the best courses available to learn programming at all levels.
Unacademy raised over $88.6 Mn from investors including Facebook, Steadview Capital, Sequoia India, Nexus Venture Partners, and Blume Ventures.
Kreatryx was created in 2014 by Ankit Goyal and offers online classes for GATE, SSC, ESE, CIL, and Vizag Steel. Post-acquisition, Kreatryx under Unacademy Labels will continue to function as a separate company.
