Google India has snagged the former head of Disney India, Sanjay Gupta, as their new country manager and sales and operations vice president.
“I am pleased to face the challenge of leading and shaping the charter of Google in India. It’s an exciting opportunity to harness the power of technology to address some of India’s unique challenges and make the Internet an engine for people and communities to develop economically, “Gupta said.
At the beginning of next year, Gupta will take over his job at Google.
Rajan Anandan, South East Asia and India’s VP for Google, resigned this year in April. Anandan was replaced by Vikas Agnihotri, the country sales manager who assumed the role of the interim MD of Google India. Gupta had previously worked with top companies such as Hindustan Unilever and Bharti Airtel. His previous stint was as Star and Disney India’s Ceo, where he also led Hotstar’s online evolution.
“We are excited to combine the skills, experience, and leadership of Sanjay with our teams and further expand on our current efforts in this highly dynamic, competitive and exciting digital economy, seeking to build a more supportive and inclusive Internet for all in India,” said Scott Beaumont, APAC President, Google.
Gupta joins Google from Star and Disney India, where he was the managing director, with a career spanning almost three decades. He played a pivotal role during that period in Star becoming India’s largest media agency.
He played a key role in spreading their traditional TV content via Hotstar to online audiences. He is also widely credited with the purchase of cricketing assets and the release of kabaddi and football leagues: the Pro Kabaddi League and the Indian Super League to develop their sports business.
In addition to his many strategic and market achievements, Gupta also shows a deep understanding of the customer and has used it to build strong brands. He led promotions for two of the vital segments of the business during his tenure at Hindustan Unilever: Oral and Homecare. He then led several successful sales and marketing initiatives at Bharti Airtel as Chief Marketing Officer for the mobile business. He is an engineer from Delhi College of Engineering and a postgraduate from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kolkata.
