  • Facebook is suffering more as compared to Instagram in the number of downloads. While Instagram registered a 9 percent fall in the downloads, Facebook took a big hit of 15 percent.
  • The main competition of Instagram, Snapchat saw a rise of 23 percent in the same time frame. The online bulletin board Pinterest also recorded a growth in the number of users.

Facebook and Instagram are facing tough competition in India from TikTok and Snapchat. In July 2019, TikTok was the most downloaded app on the iOS store while it was marginally behind facebook on the Google Play Store.

Facebook and the subsidiary photo-sharing app Instagram are finding it really tough to match the crowded market of social media apps. The mobile app downloads from iOS and play store both saw 113 percent combined fall year-over-year, as per a report by Bank of America. The main competition of Instagram, Snapchat saw a rise of 23 percent in the same time frame. The online bulletin board Pinterest also recorded a growth in the number of users.

Facebook is suffering more as compared to Instagram in the number of downloads. While Instagram registered a 9 percent fall in the downloads, Facebook took a big hit of 15 percent. Although the report does not underline any reason behind the fall, Facebook seems to still face customer hatred after the Cambridge Analytica Scandal. The scandal raised many doubts and valid concerns over user data shared with Facebook and the social media giant was found guilty of collection and sharing information without explicit consent from the user.

Snapchat - Next Big Brand

Snapchat is giving Instagram a tough time.

The social networking site owned by Mark Zuckerberg saw another privacy violation scandal when a report allegedly claimed that the company hired hundreds of private contractors to transcribe the content of calls made over its Messenger app. Following scrutiny over the same, the social media giant accepted their fault and decided to never do this again.

As a report published by Sensor Tower in July 2019, Facebook and Instagram are facing a tough fight from China-based short video platform TikTok. TikTok has the most number of downloads on the iOS store while it is marginally below Facebook on the Google Play Store.

The face swap feature launched by Sanpchat in April 2018 propelled it ahead of Instagram in the race. The new feature by the photo-sharing app allowed the app users to swap their faces on someone’s face or vice versa.

Facebook downloads were up by 3 percent year-on-year during the third quarter last year. The huge downfall this year shows the stark picture of the social media app. Facebook needs to renovate itself and answer the privacy concerns of the users if it plans to continue the rule the social media rooster and maintain its top spot in the market.
