Facebook Pushes Into TV Market With Streaming Device Portal

  • Facebook is pushing to the TV streaming space after targeting the OTT through its feature, ‘Facebook Watch’. The device will be branded under the name ‘Portal’ and will work in a similar way as of Amazon’s Fire TV Stick, but will offer more features than former by far-field microphones and a camera.
  • The device will use android which is also used by Facebook’s Oculus Go and Oculus Quest Devices. Further, the report also mentions that it will be easy to work for the content creators who have already developed Android-based apps for Amazon and Google.

Facebook is pushing to the TV streaming space after targeting the OTT through its feature, ‘Facebook Watch’. The device will be branded under the name ‘Portal’ and will work in a similar way as of Amazon’s Fire TV Stick, but will offer more features than former by far-field microphones and a camera.

As the report suggests, the Facebook Portal will use device’s camera and microphones will be used for video chatting, and may also offer a form of augmented reality. The device will use android which is also used by Facebook’s Oculus Go and Oculus Quest Devices. Further, the report also mentions that it will be easy to work for the content creators who have already developed Android-based apps for Amazon and Google.

Facebook Portal is supposedly in talks with streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Disney to integrate their services into the new device. The new TV device will have a bigger focus on content consumption as compared to existing devices.

It launched two Portal devices last year, namely the Portal and Portal+. The standard device packs a 10-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, which the Portal+ features a 15-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. These devices also come with Amazon’s Alexa and feature a smart camera and smart sound technology. The Smart Camera is able to follow different actions and is able to pan automatically and zooms into the object. The smart sound tech is said to minimize background noise and enhance that of the person speaking. These devices are yet to be launched in India.

Similarly, Facebook recently launched a new feature which is known as Facebook Dating. It was announced in the last annual Facebook developers’ conference F8 2018 and while making the announcement CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that service would change the way People date and meet each other.
Before this, Facebook tested paid subscriptions for its on-demand video streaming platform Facebook Watch. As a part of the trial period, the company will be airing content from BBC, ITV and CollegeHumor. Paid subscribers will be an addition to the revenue stream for the social network, although it is unlikely to come close to the money platform makes from mobile advertising. The company announced a 28 percent hike in the revenues to $16.9 billion for Q2 2019.
