 Happy Birthday Blue Jeans – Jacob Davis & Levi Strauss

Blue jeans are the most popular fashion item ever created in world history. In 1872, Jacob Davis a reno tailor came up with a new idea of riveted jeans as most of its customer jeans kept ripping. He feared that someone might steal the new idea of riveted pants that are more stronger and designer.

Davis didn’t have enough money to apply for patent alone so he asked help from Levi Strauss to provide some funds. Levis agreed, and the patent for “Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings”  was granted on May 20, 1873.  Modern jeans were born which were stronger and latest in fashion.

143-year-old blue jean is still a cultural and fashion icon in the world fashion. Even today blue jeans are the world’s most loved and versatile pieces of clothing.  You can still find small rivets that fasten pockets in your jeans.

Levi Strauss moved from Bavaria to San Francisco during the Gold Rush era, where they opened a dry goods business to sold clothes, boots and other goods to smaller shops of the American West. There they met with Jacob Davis, a tailor from Nevada, where they both collaborated and patent the brilliant idea.   

Denim jeans were Introduced in the 1980s, high fashion brands began to introduced stronger, designer and slim fit jeans concept.

It is estimated that approximately 450 million pair of jeans are bought by consumers in the United States.  

The rocking heavy raw denim popular in 60s bikers and furious youth, high- wasted 80s-inspired, flower print or acid-washed blue jeans are new in trends.

On June 28, 1873, edition of the Pacific Rural Press noted that:

The invention, though incredibly simple, was key. The June 28, 1873 edition of the Pacific Rural Press noted:

“Simple as this device seems, nevertheless it is quite effective, and we do not doubt that his manufacture, of overalls especially, will become quite popular amongst our working men, as the overalls are made and cut in the style of the best custom made pants. Nothing looks more slouchy in a workman than to see his pockets ripped open and hanging down, and no other part of the clothing is so apt to be torn and ripped as the pockets.”

Levi’s new jeans with the idea of rivets were called “XX” a reference to 9 oz. XX denim brand makes pants. Wherein 1890, the “XX” rebranded as 501’s, which is still going by today. By the 1920s the brand was the top-selling work pant for men in the United States.

Blue jeans became sensational in American fashion and are still very popular all around the world.
