- Hotstar is leading the charts with 300 million followed by Dailyhunt which has 190 million active users monthly.
- Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are further down in the list with 13 million and 11 million monthly active users respectively.
Indian online content space is dominated by Hotstar, the video streaming service owned by the Star Network, followed by the news aggregator app Dailyhunt and MX Player, the OTT platform owned by the Times Internet.
Redseer, a Bangalore-based research and consulting firm recently released monthly active user number for the 15 content players in the Indian online content industry including news aggregators, OTT (over-the-top) music and video streaming and short-form content.
Hotstar is leading the charts with 300 million followed by Dailyhunt which has 190 million active users monthly and MX Player which stands at 176 million. TikTok is 4th in the list with 129 million active users. Another Times Internet owned audio streaming service Gaana is at the 5th place with 110 million (largest in the audio streaming category) followed by Saavn which was acquired by Reliance Jio at 92 million.
Ujjwal Chaudhary director of Redseer Consulting in a statement highlighted the reason behind the dominance of these apps.
He said, “Nothing unites this country like cricket. Every time we play in a World Cup or any notable ICC tournament, we see very high activity on such content platforms, because people not only watch the cricket but they also talk about it and read about it.”
Hotstar owns rights to the popular sporting leagues such as the IPL (Indian Premier League), World Cup, Pro Kabbadi League, Premier League Football, Tennis and many more which accounts for its popularity.
Other global giants of video streaming industry such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are further down in the list with 13 million and 11 million monthly active users respectively.
Milestones achieved by Top Three
Hotstar touched the 100 million daily user mark during the live streaming of India vs Pakistan match in the World Cup England on 16 June, making it the highest-ever single day reach for the platform.
Dailyhunt also recently acquired LocalPlay, city-based hyper-local video content and news content application which will help them reach more users in tier 2 and tier 3 cities and also increase their base of local language users.
Recently a survey by Unomer showed that MX Player tops the chart of the most loyal user base because they provide free content from premium services directly to their users.
So with constantly increasing competition in the Indian Online Content Space, everyone is coming up with new and innovative concepts to expand their user base.
