India Internet Users- next Big Brand

  • India has 504 million active internet users or those who last month accessed the internet as per a report by IAMAI.
  • According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), an estimated 71 million children aged 5-11 years in India access the Internet on their family members’ smartphones

India has 504 million active internet users or those who last month accessed the internet. According to a report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on Digital in India, these active users were five-year-old and above as in November 2019.

According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), an estimated 71 million children aged 5-11 years in India access the Internet on their family members’ smartphones, accounting for around 14 percent of the country’s total Internet user base of over 500 million.

“Of the overall Internet population, 433 million are 12 years of age and older, and 71 million are 5-11 years of age who access the Internet on family members’ computers,” he said. Nielsen has curated the data, based on IRS data.

The study noted that nearly 70 percent of India’s active Internet population are regular users with at least once a week access to the Internet by nine out of 10 Internet users in urban India. In rural India, as of March 2019, the number of regular Internet accesses had increased by 30 million, it added.

Ironically, on Sundays/holidays, almost one-third of users access the Internet for ‘More than an hour’ over a typical working day.

The report claims that the time spent on the Internet continues to be higher in urban India compared to rural India, but with better connectivity, quality of service and affordability of mobile Internet, there could be an increase in rural consumers spending more time on the Internet in the future.

The time spent on the Internet continues to be higher in urban India compared to rural parts of the country. According to the study, 26 million new female Internet users were introduced in November 2019. This is an increase of 21 percent, higher than the 9 percent rise seen in many new users (male).

“While the percentage of male Internet users in rural India is more than double that of female Internet users, Internet use among females is growing at a rapid rate,” it said.

Mobile phones remain the first option for an Internet access system in both urban and rural India because of their affordability, as well as the availability of cheaper data plans, the study says.
