Khatabook, a digital ledger app, is expanding its operations. It has started pilot testing of insurance and credit operations, launched recently. The startup is planning to take advantage of its 8.5+ million monthly user base to start a new revenue stream.
What Khatabook CEO Says about Current Growth?
In 2019-20, the company had a total loss of Rs 126 crore. It also had zero revenue since starting Khatabook operations. It planned to enter other financial streams like insurance and credit for growth. The two-year-old startup is also working on some additional features to make Khatabook popular among Kirana stores.
In the coming days, the company will also provide paid subscription-based services to Kiranas. Paid services will help Kiranas in getting more customers through more visibility online. Khatabook collected $100 million from its investors like Sequoia Capital, Tencent, B Capital, etc. MS Dhoni, Ex-Captain of the Indian Cricket Team, is a star investor of Khatabook.
Talking about the recent developments, Ravish Naresh, CEO and Co-founder said:
“In last 2 years, we focussed on the product development and capturing maximum market share. The company’s priority was to provide as many as features possible for merchants. We worked hard on the software. We also wanted to have maximum reach and gain a majority share of the market. Recently started financial services and credit functionalities by Khatabook is natural extensions of our domain.”
In December 2020, Khatabook brought employee management feature, Pagarkhata, to help Kirana stores to manage attendance, salary-related activities of workers. The bookkeeping app and MyStore are the other two major services started by Khatabook.

“There is a common belief that people don’t pay, but if you will provide value, merchants will be happy to pay for the valuable services,” said Natesh.
Khatabook Future Plan and Recent Key Services
The company’s next plan is to enter in invoicing and Goods and Services Tax(GST) for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises(MSME). It will launch a new app for these services in the second quarter of 2021. It is also working on an inventory feature to make wholesalers’ life easy.
More than one million monthly active users benefit from Pagarkhata, whereas 3.72 million users have downloaded the MyStore app. Khatabook has helped in 1.03 billion transactions last year with a total value of $100 billion. It claims to have a total of 41 million unique users since its inception.
