Biocon Chairman and CEO Kiran Mazumdar Shaw was appointed EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 on Wednesday, and will now represent India at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Award meeting in Monte Carlo from June 4-6.
Awards for nine other categories were also revealed, a press release said, adding the EY Entrepreneur of The Year Awards is the only global business award program that is recognized across 60 countries.
At the awards meeting, railway and trade & industry minister Piyush Goyal and state minister for finance and corporate affairs Anurag Thakur were the chief guest and honorary guest, respectively.
EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani said: “This year’s winners come from both long-established and new-age companies, but what’s common to them is how they transformed their businesses or re-imagined the sector as a whole by making bold bets and using technology and innovation to delight their customers.”
The winners were chosen by an eminent eight-member jury headed by Kotak Mahindra Bank MD and CEO Uday Kotak
The other members are MakeMyTrip founder, group chairman and group director Deep Kalra, co-founder and managing partner of ChrysCapital Kunal Shroff, founder of TVS Capital Funds, chairman and MD Gopal Srinivasan, chairman of Advent Private Equity Naina Lal Kidwai, co-founder of Everstone Group Sameer Sain, vice chairman of the Sanmar Group Vijay Sankar, and co-promoter of Asian Paints Jalaj Dani.
The Start-up category award was conferred on Falguni Nayar, founder, and CEO of Nykaa E-Retail. With its omnichannel approach and a customer-centric model driven by digital technology, she has taken many Indian and global beauty brands to the doorstep of millions of Indians. In three years, she has not only successfully increased sales with a 150 percent CAGR but also remained equally concentrated on profitability.

Yashish Dahiya, CEO and co-founder, PolicyBazaar has been awarded the category of Financial Services for revolutionizing the sector with its innovative innovation and bold vision, while rapidly building upscale. With 100 million users to his website and 500,000 transactions per month, he is among the top unicorns in the country with a recent valuation of 1.65 billion dollars.
