In the past few years, OTT services such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Now have seen a dramatic rise in number of their subscribers.
With the fears of coronavirus forcing people into lockdown, the percentage of people streaming shows on Twitch and co. was growing fast.
Amazon Twitch noted a 31 percent increase in viewers from 33 million by the end of the month in early March to 43 million. Meanwhile, in people binge-watching TV shows, HBO recorded a rise of 65 percent.
Now, the top 10 video streaming apps by an average monthly active user for the US have been revealed by App Annie.
Netflix tops the rankings, predictably, led by Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, Twitch, ESPN, Roku, CNN News, Fox News, and Tubi TV. Netflix announced that, in Q1 2020, its subscription numbers nearly doubled to 16 million new subscribers compared with Q4 2019.
The news more than 65 percent pushed the stock price. Furthermore, in just six months Disney+ has reported 55 million paying subscribers. Early on in lowering viewing efficiency, Amazon Prime Video joined companies like Netflix to stop overloading networks, although it is unknown how many subscribers the service gained due to lockout audiences.
Nevertheless, the data shows that the coronavirus pandemic has had an immense impact on video-sharing device downloads and subscriptions. It remains to be seen if the burst will continue for the rest of the year.
After the government declared the lockdown time, OTT platforms were gaining significant popularity as people were staying and relying on platforms to entertain themselves. In the entire lockdown era, the OTT streaming industry has seen a growing curve both in demand and benefit. The streaming giant Netflix has been the biggest OTT gainer in the entire quarantine era, amongst others. Also, the demand for streaming services is expected to grow further as the government extended the lockdown period for another 19 days to neutralize the Coronavirus threat.
