Paytm, Jio & Amazon Most Trusted Online Brands, Reports Survey

Indian consumers often opt between foreign and home-grown brands while purchasing clothes, booking online tickets and their preferred telecom services provider says results of a survey by YouGov that asked Indian consumers about their most trusted online brands in India.

Paytm, Jio and MakeMyTrip have emerged as the most trusted online brands, while e-commerce giant Amazon won the maximum trust for online shopping.

The survey was done on 1,017 respondents aged 18 to 40 and above on the Internet in August 2019 for the results by YouGov.

The respondents were asked to choose between 76 brands across five categories- online travel booking, online payments or e-wallets, cab-hailing, e-commerce, and mobile network providers.

The survey said that Indians find global brands more trustworthy in areas of online shopping and e-commerce while they find Indian brands more reliable when it comes to online payments, for travel bookings and while choosing a mobile network provider.

The most trusted telecom network brand is Reliance-Jio that disrupted India’s telecom market since its inception as 41 percent rooting for it. Home-grown Airtel which started its services in the 90s emerged as the second most trusted with around one-third people placing its trust in the brand. Vodafone ranked third with 16 percent of respondents saying they trust the telecom provider.

“It has been only four years since (Jio) the brand launched in India, however, it has managed to completely change the game for telecom players in the country,” the survey said.

E-commerce section saw Amazon as the clear winner with around 45 percent of the respondents putting their trust in the global giant. Home-grown retailers such as Flipkart and Myntra were ranked 2nd and 3rd with 21 percent and 13 percent votes respectively.

Amazon also recorded maximum trust when it came to shopping online for electronics with more than 50 percent of people putting trust in the as to 25 percent of Flipkart.

For the online travel bookings, MakeMyTrip was trusted by 34 percent followed by Paytm with 17 percent and GoIbibo with 6 percent.

Digital payments section saw, Home-grown Paytm which is backed by SoftBank was the first choice for most with over 40 percent votes. Google Pay which has entered India’s digital payment space most recently in September 2017 stands on 2nd place with 27 percent of those surveyed. Flipkart-owned PhonePe ranked third with 10 percent of respondents saying that they trust the brand.

YouGov mentioned that despite joining recently, Google Pay has increased its user base.

The survey also recorded consumer trust for ride-hailing and renting cabs where safety pips other features when it comes to consumer preferences. Both Uber and Ola have emerged as the most trusted ride-hailing apps.
