Felix Kjellberg aka PewDiePie who is a gaming vlogger has reached the landmark of 100 million subscribers on YouTube.
PewDiePie is the owner of second-highest subscribed channel on YouTube, he has built a base of young fans with his game commentaries ‘Let’s Play’. In the process, he has also attracted huge controversy.
The 29-year-old Swedish YouTuber who has posted videos with Nazi imagery and antisemitic jokes and has been embraced by far-right figures. One incident is when the Christchurch shooting suspect as his viewers to subscribe to PewDiePie during his live stream of the horrific event. In one of the PewDiePie’s videos, some of his crew members held up a sign saying: “Death to all Jews”
Previously, he had to remove his reference of a Nazi Channel after the uproar and asked for an apology.
Last year when the Indian entertainment company T-series started to amass huge support to become the most subscribed channel on YouTube with the Bollywood stars backing them to overthrow the five-year reign of PewDiePie as the most subscribed channel, he started urging to his followers to subscribe to his channel.
YouTube stars came in his support, such as the YouTube millionaire “Mr. Beast” purchased hoardings and radio ads to support him in North Carolina. Another YouTuber, Justin Roberts bought a $1 million billboard in Times Square urging people to subscribe to PewDiePie. Kjellberg himself made a diss rap track about the label in order to defame them and hold on the top spot.
Although the popularity of T-series rose in step with the wider internet access in South Asia and has around 110 million subscribers
PewDiePie is paid to endorse different products on his channel like recently, the actor Jack Black is among those who competed against him on the video game Minecraft.
Kjellberg got married on Monday and is yet to comment on this remarkable achievement.
