The number of Internet subscribers in India increased to over 743 million by the end of March 2020, clocking a sequential-quarterly growth rate of 3.4 percent, Trai ‘s data on the quarterly output of the sector shows.

The third position was held by Vodafone Idea, as its internet user base market share for the reference period was 18.7 percent.
In its report, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said, “The total number of internet subscribers increased from 718.74 million at the end of December 2019 to 743.19 million at the end of March 2020, posting a quarterly growth rate of 3.40 percent.”
The number of wireless internet subscribers was 720.7 million (97 percent share of the total pie) and 22.4 million were wired internet subscribers. A staggering 92.5% of all internet subscribers used broadband for internet access—687.4 million broadband users and 55.7 million narrowband subscribers were part of the internet customer base.
“From 661,94 million at the end of December 2019 to 687,44 million at the end of March 2020, the broadband internet user base increased by 3.85 percent,” said the Trai report entitled ‘Indian Telecom Services Efficiency Indicators, January-March, 2020.’ Broadband connectivity is characterised as Internet access with a minimum bandwidth of 512 kilobits per second or more, whereas narrowband refers to lower-speed net access.
Wireless Internet subscribers rose at the end of March 2020 to 720.7 million, a growth rate of 3.51 per cent quarter-on-quarter.
96.90 percent of total internet subscribers use mobile devices for internet service access. At the end of March 20, wired internet subscribers were just 3.02 percent of total internet subscribers, Trai said.
State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) kept a 50.3 percent market share of 11.27 million subscribers out of a total of 22.42 million wired internet subscribers, led by Bharti Airtel of 2.47 million subscribers.
Reliance Jio kept a market share of 53.76 percent in the wireless internet business, led by Bharti Airtel (24 per cent) in the quarter ended March 20, it said.
Maharashtra (63.01 million), Andhra Pradesh including Telangana (58.65 million), UP (East) (54.60 million), Tamil Nadu including Chennai (51.64 million), and Madhya Pradesh including Chhattisgarh (48.72 million) were the top five Internet subscription service areas.
Jio is not only the market leader in internet market but they are also creating a digital space to dominate and the market share of Jio which is more than double of Bharti Airtel shows the sheer dominance Jio has in Indian digital space right now.
