Report Says 15% of India’s Internet Users Belong To 5-11 Years Age Group

  • As of March 31, 2019, India had 451 million active monthly Internet users, second only to China in terms of user numbers.
  • The report also said that out of 451 million monthly active users, 385 million are over 12 years of age and 66 million are in the age bracket of 5 to 11 years who access the internet on the devices of family members and two-thirds of internet users in India are in the age group of 12-29 years.

Nearly 15 percent of India’s active Internet users are children between the ages of 5 and 11. According to India’s Internet and Mobile Association (IAMAI), the country’s 66 million Internet users are 5-11 years old. They are accessing the Internet on family members ‘ phones.

As of March 31, 2019, India had 451 million active monthly Internet users, second only to China in terms of user numbers. With an internet penetration of only 36 percent, however, there is a lot of scope for development.

The report also said that out of 451 million monthly active users, 385 million are over 12 years of age and 66 million are in the age bracket of 5 to 11 years who access the internet on the devices of family members and two-thirds of internet users in India are in the age group of 12-29 years.

The report records that in terms of absolute numbers, urban India has 192 million users which almost the same as of the number of users as rural India. However, if we talk about the percentage of penetration, given the population distribution in India, urban India has a comparatively higher level of penetration.

Both the metro cities, Mumbai and Delhi top the list with 11.7 million and 11.2 million internet users respectively. Bengaluru and Kolkata with 6.1 million users share the third place followed by Chennai with 5.4 million Internet users.

The study also shows that 72% of urban Internet users, or roughly 139 million, use the Internet on a daily basis. On the other hand, roughly 109 million or 57% of rural Internet users access the Internet on a daily basis.

Nearly one-third of customers access the Internet for ‘more than one hour’ in urban India, while a comparable percentage of customers access the Internet for 15-30 minutes in rural India.

“With better connectivity, quality of service and affordability of mobile internet, there could be an increase in rural consumers spending more time on the internet in future,” the report said.

The report also points out that when it comes to Internet use, there is a clear gender disparity. In India, there are fewer female Internet users than male users. The population of female Internet users is half the 258 million male Internet users, and the prejudice in rural India is more evident. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi, it said, have a higher percentage of female internet users than other states.

With such a huge rise in the number of internet users is largely credited to Jio for entering the market with dirt-cheap rates and disrupting the internet sector.
