We have all seen the hilarious memes online of Starbucks employees spelling customer’s names wrong on cups. Some of the spellings are simple while others are ludicrous. However, that was not what caught most people’s eye. It was the fact that these were increasing in number day by day, and becoming weirder and weirder. Super Deluxe, a company that was wondering about the same thing, conducted a short experiment. They placed orders under a common, easy-to-spell, name ‘Molly’, to five different outlets, and came back with results like ‘Molli’, ‘Mali’ and even ‘Mommy’.

With that, they realized that the brand does this on purpose. When customers see that their names are misspelled, they find it hilarious and then share it on social media. This gives the brand free advertising, especially when the photos end up going viral because of the mistakes made. What a great strategy to save money! As more and more people post, even more, potential customers are inspired to do the same, just to make their followers laugh.

Do you know who is really laughing in this scenario? Starbucks is the brand. And it is laughing all the way to the bank!
