On Friday, the Chinese company ByteDance-owned TikTok short-form video app announced that it has named Nikhil Gandhi as head of India. Gandhi, based in Mumbai, will contribute to the development of TikTok’s products and operations being established in the country. Gandhi joins TikTok from Times Global Broadcasting’s business where he worked as chairman and chief operating officer.
Gandhi will concentrate on encouraging innovation among TikTok users in his new role, while at the same time working to have a wider positive impact in the country. As head of India TikTok, he will concentrate on the main initiatives that benefit the community, such as #EduTok.
Gandhi has held leadership positions at leading media and entertainment firms in a career spanning over 20 years. Before Times Network, he worked for nine years at The Walt Disney Company. He has also been involved in working with UTV Global Broadcasting and Viacom Media Networks. He is an alumnus of the famous Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics and the University Of Mumbai completing both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the field of marketing.

In late 2017, TikTok, with more than 200 million users in India, entered the market. Especially from smaller towns in the country, it has seen rapid growth. The international offices of TikTok include Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, Seoul, Jakarta, and Tokyo.
Recently, It was revealed that TikTok has been paying money to the premium creators. For these creators, TikTok has four performance levels. While its top-tier creator can earn up to $1750, levels 2, 3, and 4 creators would earn $1150, $550 and $250 respectively. According to the records, this category is based on “rating ratings,” an internal metric that counts “full Talent of the month video views.”
Also recently, ByteDance, the owner of video-sharing app TikTok and one of the most popular unicorns in the world, reported revenue of 50-60 billion yuan ($7 billion to $8.4 billion) in a better-than-expected result for the first quarter, said Reuters. ByteDance, who was loss-making in the first half, also posted a profit in June and was optimistic that gain would be made in the second half of the year, one of the people said.
With someone as experienced as Gandhi among their ranks who knows India media industry in and out will help TikTok emerge as a much bigger player among its competitors.
