- TikTok becomes the most downloaded app of Q1 2020 on a list dominated by Facebook-owned apps. It is followed by Whatsapp & Facebook on the 2nd & 3rd respectively.
Sensor Tower came with the data of most downloaded apps in quarter 1 of 2020. There was a total of 33.6 billion downloads of different apps across the world. Let’s look at the most downloaded apps worldwide:-
- TikTok– Tik-Tok has been overperforming since its launch, as a recent addition to social media applications. This app comes with a unique feature of sharing engaging, collaborative, amusing and insightful short videos. It is a platform that welcomes all aspirants to content and brings out the best in them. Top 50 Tik-Tok creators have more followers than the populations of Mexico, Canada, the UK, Australia, and the US combined Tik-Tok is one of the rare apps which is not owned by Facebook and is still dominating. It was downloaded 315 million times in quarter 1 of 2020.
- Whatsapp– Facebook-owned WhatsApp messenger takes 2nd position in the race of most downloaded apps in Q1 of 2020 and it’s said to be the most used messenger globally. India is the biggest market for WhatsApp with 200mn active users followed by 120mn from Brazil and 20mn user-base coming from the US. 65bn WhatsApp messages are sent every day at a speed of 29mn messages per minute. It was downloaded 250 million times.
- Facebook– Facebook tops in terms of social media usage and is the 3rd most downloaded app in Q1 of 2020. In recent times, Facebook has seen its monopoly being challenged by TikTok. Facebook has more than 1 bn userbases out of which 85% of daily active users are from outside US/Canada. India is the largest population on Facebook with over 270 mn users followed by 190 mn users from the US. Out of 1 bn users, 96% of the users accessed via mobile devices. It was downloaded 185 million times.
- Instagram– 3rd Facebook-owned app on the list is Instagram which started as a virtual photo album but it has turned into major business mode on social media. With more business and influencers joining the platform, it is bound to grow in the coming times. More than 1bn people use Instagram and 500mn people use Instagram stories every day. Users are expected to spend more than 45 minutes on Instagram by 2020. It was downloaded more than 150 million times.
- Messenger- 4th Facebook-owned app on the list is a messenger which is an independent app for messages of Facebook profiles. More than 1.3bn people use messenger each month and there are approx. 3lakh active bots. More than 20bn messages being sent between people and businesses on Messenger every month. It was downloaded more than 140 million times.
- Likee- Likee is a short video development and sharing platform based in Singapore, available for operating systems running iOS and Android. It was first released by Bigo in July 2017. The software allows video shooting and editing special effects functionality, such as 4D Magic and Dynamic Stickers. With its increasing popularity, it can be a potential threat to TikTok. It was downloaded 83 million times.
- Zoom- Lockdown period due to Coronavirus pandemic has seen people working from home and working from home companies are using different video calling apps. Zoom is the most popular among them as it crossed 200 million users last week. This app offers online chat and video telephony facilities through a cloud-based and peer-to-peer software network, which is used for teleconferencing, telecommuting, distance education, which social interaction. It was downloaded 80 million times.
- SHAREit- Users may use SHAREit to transfer images, videos, music, contacts, devices, and any other data to computers. SHAREit framework enables file transfer directly to Mobile, Windows Phone, Android and iOS apps. It was downloaded more than 78 million times.
- Snapchat– Another social media application on the list, Snapchat has approx. 203mn active userbase on its platform and 61% of the global Snapchat users are females. Snapchat in the past has given tough competition to Instagram and is considered the major reason behind changes in Instagram. It was downloaded 75 million times.
- Netflix- Only OTT Platform to feature on the list, Netflix has proved to be a blessing for people in lockdown. People are investing in Netflix owing to its amazing content. It saw a 7% surge in its shares and also an increased market cap due to ongoing pandemic.
