Recent conflicts between India and China have made things complicated for businesses as well. Including Tiktok, India banned over 250 Chinese apps. Government officials confirmed that these apps are not following security and privacy policies properly. But this ban did not stop TikTok to rule the online market. Tiktok secured the first position among non-gaming apps in terms of 2020 downloads.
TikTok Journey to the Popular Non-Gaming App
Tiktok is a short video platform. In recent years, it got immense popularity among creators and marketers. As per sensor tower’s Store Intelligence Platform, users downloaded TikTok 56 million times in December 2020.
If we talk about the downloads platform wise, then TikTok received the second position on Google Play Store. On the iOS store, TikTok secured number 1 positions. On the Android platform, Facebook was the most downloaded non-gaming app in December 2020.
11% of total TikTok downloads were from China. The USA contributed 10 percent of the total TikTok downloads in December 2020.
WhatsApp was the most downloaded non-gaming app in November 2020. Online users downloaded it approximately 58 million times. Indian users had a contribution of 30 % in the above total downloads. WhatsApp is an instant messaging platform. Recently, WhatsApp also launched payment features for Indian users. WhatsApp has a strong user base in India.
Tiktok had 55 million downloads to achieve the second position in November 2020. Despite the Indian ban, four Indian creators are on the list of the top 15 highest paid Tiktokers.
If we look at the total non-gaming apps downloads monthly in the year 2020, Tiktok secured the first position in all months except April and November. Zoom was the most downloaded non-gaming app in April 2020.
After looking at the short video format popularity, Youtube also launches Youtube Shorts, a short video supporting platform.
Facebook is Competing with Tiktok
Facebook secured the second position among the most downloaded non-gaming apps in December 2020. The popular social media app was installed approximately 50 million times.
India contributed the maximum to Facebook’s achievement. Indian users contributed 24% of the total Facebook downloads in December 2020. The USA secured the second position with a total of 8% downloads.
Whatsapp, Instagram, and Zoom also secured their places in the top 5 non-gaming apps that were downloaded maximum times in December 2020.
Instagram and WhatsApp are also owned by Facebook. data does not include the preinstalled apps. This ranking is based on the data taken in the interval Dec 1 to Dec 31, 2020.
Other short video apps like Chingari, Moj, Josh, and MX Takatak are trying to fill the wide gap left by Tiktok in India. Tiktok is planning to relaunch in India. Indian influencers and Marketers still miss the unique features and huge fan base of TikTok.
