In its report, Deloitte tells about the top 250 retailing companies from all around the world as well as the top 50 emerging retail companies.
Today we will walk you through the world’s top 10 retailers globally and try and quote down the reasons that have made them reserve a space on the list.

1. Wal-Mart Stores Inc:
Undoubtedly, Walmart is got to be on the 10 retailers globally. Walmart retained its position as the world’s largest retailer with an improvement in its retail revenue growth of 3% in FY17.
After a round of acquisition of eCommerce stores like Jet.com, ModCloth, Shoes.com, Moosejaw, Bonobos, and Flipkart – greater investments in store remodeling to integrate its store and digital businesses.

2. Costco Wholesale Corporation:
Next on the list of top 10 retailers globally is Costco. Though Costco is behind Walmart in terms of how big a retailer is. In 2016, Costco was the world’s largest retailer of choice and prime beef, organic foods, rotisserie chicken and wine.
2nd contender on the list of top 10 retailers globally showed an improvement in its retail revenue of 8.7% as compared to 2.2% in FY16.
Costco is currently operating in 12 countries. Double less than Walmart stores, it is still giving a head-to-head fight to the world’s largest retailer.
3. The Kroger Co:
Unexpectedly the Kroger Co. is 3rd largest retailer brand. Though operating in just one country it has generated revenue of around $118,982 in FY17.
Kroger’s revenue grew after merging with Modern HC Holdings. Supermarket sales increased because Kroger Co. launched the Restock Kroger initiative in 2017.
Focusing on data-driven marketing strategy around pricing, personalized communications with customers and humongous product assortment in company’s stores across the country has made the retail giant reserve 3rd spot on top 10 retailers globally.
4. Amazon Inc:
Visionary Jeff Bezos is everywhere. Even on the list of top 10 retailers globally. Amazon’s 33% increase in its North America region’s sales contributed to its strong revenue growth.
After taking care of pricing of products including shipping offers through its Prime delivery service along with inventory availability has been major reasons behind its growth.
Amazon Inc. operates in 14 continents and has plans to expand in more countries in the coming time.
5. Schwarz Group:
The above 4 retail giants belonged to the US. Our 5th contender on the list of top 10 retailers globally is a German company that is said to be operating in 30 countries. Out of 30 countries, Austria, Spain, and the Czech Republic contributed to high sales growth.
Despite higher retail revenue growth of 7.4% in FY17, compared to 5.3% in FY16 Schwarz Group is on the 5th spot.
6. The Home Depot Inc:
Home Depot Inc. is also a member of a $100 billion dollar retail club and generated around $100.9 billion of sales in FY17.
Future plans of the company seem to be focused on an interconnected retail experience through its own eCommerce site.
Currently, Home Depot Inc. operates in 4 countries and it’s the only home-improvement retail giant on the list of top 10 retailers globally.
7. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc:
By 2018, this retail giant achieved the milestone of acquiring around 1932 stores and 3 distribution centers from Rite Aid at the end of 2018.
The company is divided into 3 divisions – Retail Pharmacy USA (Walgreens and Duane Reade), Retail Pharmacy International (Boots and other retail operations internationally), and Pharmaceutical Wholesale.
It began trading on the NASDAQ on December 31st, 2014. Walgreens operates in 10 countries and generated revenue of around $99115 million in FY18.
8. Aldi Einkauf GmbH & Co. oHG:
Another German retail giant has made it to the list of top 10 retailers globally. Strong expansion strategy helped Aldi to post strong revenue growth of 7.7% in FY17 compared to merely 4.8% in FY16.
Aldi is said to retain 8th spot on top 10 retailers globally. Aldi operated in 18 countries.
9. CVS Health Corporation:
Thought its net revenue for the year ended December 31st, 2017 declined 2.1% (as compared to 16) with pharmacy contributing around 75% of the revenue.
CVS Health corporation moved 1 spot up this year as compared to the previous year. Our US-based retail giant operates in 3 countries with a revenue of $79398 million.
10 Tesco PLC:
Tesco entered the list of top 10 retailers globally with a revenue of $74 billion in sales. The company registered a year-on-year revenue growth of 2.8%.
This came from the company’s growth focusing on fresh and re-launch of over 10,000 private label products, which fuelled strong sales performance in the UK.
Tesco operated in 8 countries and moved 1 spot up this year on the list of top 10 retailers globally.
