  • Udemy’s online learning platform has become India’s biggest (non-gaming) download on the Google Play Store surpassing Tinder.

Udemy’s online learning platform has become India’s biggest (non-gaming) download on the Google Play Store. According to data from SimilarWeb and Play Store, Udemy climbed three spots overtaking Tinder for the week ending January 11, 2020.

Google One, LivU, Azar, and Truecaller are the other non-gaming apps in the top 10. Gaming apps continue to dominate spending in India, led by PUBG Mobile.

Users can choose from more than 130,000 learning courses in more than 60 languages on the Udemy website. Such courses range from programming languages such as Java and Python to classes on personal skills development such as writing, design, marketing, etc. More than 50,000 specialist teachers teach those courses. On Play Store, the Udemy app has registered more than 10 million installs.

Users can even access and view the lessons offline. The emergence of Udemy mirrors the development of the Indian online learning and skills market. Already fighting for publicity are related sites like Udacity, upGrad, Coursera, Simplilearn and more.

The nation became the top market for smartphone installs in May 2019, ahead of even the US. India has also seen the largest number of new installations on the Google Play Store worldwide, more than 29 percent compared to 2018, according to data from Sensor Tower. It is one of the fastest-growing economies of apps, accounting for 31 percent (or 466.8 million) of unique installations worldwide.

The roost was dominated by media, networking, and video-streaming devices, with TikTok becoming India’s fastest-growing device in 2019.

Elsewhere, Netflix was the decade’s highest-grossing device while Facebook was the most downloaded. Subway Surfers brushed past Candy Crush Saga as the most widely available free game of the decade for computer applications. India was doing this too. “It may shock some to learn that Subway Surfers was the most downloaded smartphone game of the decade, led by its strong success in India, which accounted for more than 15 percent of its all-time downloads,” Smartphone Annie said in a survey.

Udemy is an online learning platform, developed in May 2010, targeting professional adults and students. The platform has over 30 million students and 50,000 instructors who teach courses in more than 60 languages. There were more than 245 million registrations for the course. Students and instructors come from more than 190 countries and 2/3 of students are outside the US. Udemy also has more than 4,000 business customers and 80 percent of Fortune 100 companies are using Udemy for employee upskilling (Udemy for the industry).

It was founded in 2010 by Eric Bali, Gagan Biyani and Oktay Caglar. After getting rejected for 30 times, Udemy by bootstrapped by its founders and received its first funding in August 2010.
