  • Fighting economic slowdown, Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo clocked Rs 2.2 crore sales in the first two days of opening their India debut last week.
  • On Friday, Uniqlo, Japan’s biggest fashion brand, opened its first store in India to the public, offering Spain’s Zara and H&M rivalry. The company was “thrilled with the response from Indian customers, particularly with the feedback our store received directly during the opening weekend.” The 35,000-sq ft in Vasant Kunj’s Ambience Mall, spread over three floors, is the first of Uniqlo’s three outlets.

Fighting economic slowdown, Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo clocked Rs 2.2 crore sales in the first two days of opening their India debut store last week. While Uniqlo’s first-day sales of around Rs 1.2 crore are weak as compared to the Rs 1.75 crore posted by Sweden’s Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) in 2015, market watchers found Uniqlo’s figure “impressive” as it came in the middle of a recession when customers cut spending on everything from apparel to automobiles.

The Japanese retailer plans to open two more outlets in the National Capital Region in the coming months, one in Saket’s DLF Avenue Mall and one smaller in Gurgaon’s DLF CyberHub. India, along with Italy and Vietnam, is the third country to join the Tokyo-based flagship label Fast Retailing this year. Over the decades, Uniqlo founder Tadashi Yanai has turned the small clothing shop company of his dad into one of the biggest fashion powerhouses in the world. He formed Unique Clothing in Hiroshima in 1984, which is now known as Uniqlo.

Uniqlo operates over 2,200 stores in 23 countries, including China, the United States, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Tokyo-listed Fast Retailing posted $19 billion in revenue and $1.4 billion in profit for fiscal 2018. “Fast Retailing has long wanted to open shops in India, despite the tremendous potential of a nation of 1.3 billion people, that generates annual GDP growth of 7 percent and has an average age of 27,” Yanai, who is also Japan’s wealthiest businessman, said at the opening of the store.

Ambience Mall Vasant Kunj’s first Uniqlo store carries a total LifeWear line-up for men, girls, children, and infants. It will also have popular products such as ULD ( Ultra-light down) and Heattech garments. The first store is spread across a total retail space of 35,000 sq feet and is a large format store. Uniqlo was founded by Billionaire Tadashi Yanai and is the third-largest retailer in the world, after Inditex and H&M.
