In June 2020, Homegrown on-demand video service platform Zee5 was named one of the top 10 most downloaded streaming apps in the world along with other giants such as YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, Disney+ and others.
Zee5 is the ninth most downloaded app across Apple’s App Store and Google Play store, according to Sensor Tower’s Market Intelligence report. The platform owned by the Essel Group also reached the sixth spot in Google Play store’s most-downloaded games. Zee5 reported 4.16 Mn downloads, 3.5 Mn of which originated in India. India, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates account for over 96 percent of their market share.
In 2018, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited launched Zee5 with localized and related content for the Indian public. Content is available in 12 languages including English, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, and Punjabi. It has more than 1.25 Lakh hours of on-demand programming and 100 + live TV channels, according to its new press release. On Google Play store Zee5 has over 100 mn downloads.
“The platform brings together the best of originals, Indian and international films and television shows, music, children’s content, cine plays, live television and health and lifestyle content all in one destination,” the company’s previous press release noted. The platform will also be launching its short video app HiPi as an Indian alternative to the banned TikTok app.
The Sensor Tower study also highlighted that with over 25 Mn downloads YouTube will be the world’s most downloaded device in June. Nearly 12.2% (3 Mn) of these downloads came from US users, while Indians contributed over 11.2% (2.8 Mn) of downloads.
With more than 20.8 Mn of installs, Netflix was the second most downloaded program, reflecting a 33.8 percent YoY rise. The US contributed approximately 16.8 percent (3.8 million), Brazil added 11.5 percent (2.4 million) of downloads and India added 8.3 percent (1.7 million). Amazon Prime Video, YouTube Kids, and Microsoft’s Twitch game streaming application rounded out the world’s top five most-installed gaming devices for the month.
Homegrown video streaming site Hotstar was Google Play’s 10th most downloaded application while Disney’s ‘Disney+ Hotstar’ joint venture was the 8 most downloaded app overall.
India saw a 55 percent jump in overall streaming traffic during the Covid-19 resulting lockdown between March to May, according to ACT Fibernet’s ‘State of Internet Traffic Pattern’ survey. Ironically, unlike pre-COVID years, traffic during the weekdays and weekends is not substantially different. On the opposite, on weekdays the platforms note a much bigger climb. The study highlights a 73 percent rise on weekdays and an increase of 65 percent on the weekend.
The study added that India noted a 40 percent rise in internet peak traffic, a 66 percent rise in downloads per user per month, and an increase of 37 percent in average uploads per user per month.
