Zoom video conferencing software has become the most-downloaded app in India, surpassing TikTok and Instagram likes.

Until now, more than 10 crore people have installed the Zoom Cloud Meetings among the top free applications for Android devices available in the Google Play Store.

Suitable for high-quality video calls, Zoom is riding high on a wave of popularity as people try to find ways to stay in touch with friends, colleagues, and family at a time when social distancing norms are in effect.

The app allows up to 100 people to have a conversation at a time and users can do so for 40 minutes at a time, free of charge.

One of the key factors behind Zoom’s increasing acceptability may be the high number of participants.

Though Google Duo recently announced it will help up to 12 people, that is still a long way behind what Zoom is offering. The WhatsApp, India’s most common messaging app, supports only 4-person calls. Most devices aren’t doing any better.

To use the Zoom feature, you can either download and install it from your computer or use a compatible browser’s web interface.

Zoom encountered another surge this month in daily users, jumping from 200 million in March to 300 million in the last three weeks, it said in a blog post on Wednesday. Before the coronavirus outbreak caused millions of people to operate from home, the video conferencing app had only 10 million users in December, but its development has raised scrutiny over its security and privacy concerns.

The figures come from an update by CEO Eric Yuan on his 90-day safety plan. Yuan said the company would avoid adding new features to Zoom last month so it could devote its resources to resolving issues such as “Zoombombing” when uninvited participants join the meeting.

The company said its update to Zoom 5 will be available in the next few days. It will include AES 256-bit GCM encryption intrusion-blocking and the ability of account administrators to choose the data center will be redirected via their video call (if they wish to avoid a particular region)

TikTok becomes the most downloaded app of Q1 2020 on a list dominated by Facebook-owned apps. It is followed by Whatsapp & Facebook on the 2nd & 3rd respectively.
